Us and ponies
« on: April 01, 2011, 10:55:26 pm »

Having a breather before setting off to the top of the hill in the background. We have 9 ponies altogether, and all are barefoot and cope very well with the rough tracks.  Live on the edge of the moors, over 1000ft above sea level, out full time unrugged.

You lucky duck!  Lovely sturdy ponies. Always wanted my own horse, never managed to have time and money together, too old now
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

Well, we have plenty spare ones here you can ride, Annie!!  The good thing is, they are not very big, so easier to get on and off.  The ones in the photo are 14hh, but we have a very stocky Fell gelding who is only 13.1hh

That would be my dream pony, but as always the girls come first and they have the ponies in our household.

i am jealous of your riding territory, i have to go on the road for a spell before i get anywhere nice. and it's so much more fun with company too!

Are they dales?  My boy looks just like them and he is a dalesx - he's also barefoot now and such a different pony it is unbelievable.

Yes, Freddiesfarm, they are Dales.  We have 5 Dales and 2 Fells, plus an Irish Draught mare and a Dartmoor x Shetland.  The ones in the photo are  broken to drive as well as ride.  As you can see, the gelding is a lot wider, but the mare will put on weight now the grass is coming.  The good thing about them is that they are good doers.

People wonder how we tell them apart, as they are all black, but some have a small star. I like to think I can tell the difference, but   I have to confess that I have gone in the field and brought out one to ride, and had to return it when I realised it was the wrong one!!!!

We were at a show locally last year.  The mare in the photo won the Mountain and Moorland class.  I was waiting at the ringside to hand over to my hubby the mares younger sister, who was in the youngstock mountain and moorland.  The lady judge asked hubby what he was playing at, entering the mare he had just told her was 11 in a youngstock class.  He kept his face straight as he told her this pony was only 3.  She said nothing ;D
