« on: February 22, 2011, 09:30:26 pm »
I was met early this morning with a bleating from the corner, and out it came running, so agile, and so so black!! ive never seen a lamb so black, not even a speck of white anywhere!!  must be near full Norfolk Horn gens!!  but if you look at the mother she is more like a goat !!

What a lovely ewe lamb.  I hope you're going to keep her.  Apparently all black sheep are lucky and every flock should have one!!  The mother does look like a bit like a goat, but I think its just because of her horns.

She's lovely! Will she stay black? Our Ryelands are born black but change colour as they get older.

yes I will keep her, the breed well, the ewe mother is suppose to be suffolk x Norfolk Horn, the ram in the flock before I brought them was a norfolk horn, I think whats happened is the ewe mother is half norfolk horn but the previous owner breed her with her ram norfolk horn father so the lamb is 3/4 Norfolk horn and a small percentage suffolk, im surprised it wasnt malformed !!!   generally the lambs have been white with black mottling, as they get older the fleece turns white and they keep black faces and feet !! I think it will stay black im sure as mother has stayed dark brown.

I would love some dark wool to play with when I'm felting. I must think about getting some dark sheep.

We bought some commercial crosses last year to get started with including a black ewe throwback that looks mostly Black Welsh Mountain - spindly legs and a turbocharger.  The farmer sold her cheap because she was never going to make much for him but Alice is a real character.  We're going to borrow a Ram (has to be a bit smaller than a Dartmoor) and see what comes out next year.
