my pigs went this morning, my geese went yesterday!
« on: December 15, 2008, 10:48:11 am »
Hi there, having a good day today but strangely quiet on the field....its like the marie celeste! The geese went yesterday and we took our 2 pigs this morning, much easier and less stressful than I imagined. ~The staff at the abbatoir were fantastic and very complementary about our girls which was great. only thing is we have had to buy another freezer to put all of the meat in!!
MERRY XMAS EVERYONE !!! :D :D :D

Just woundering what about Turkey's? I never read any posts about people rearing them, would have a go at having some for next year if I had a better pen as I know they have to spend a few days shut in before they are ready to be dispatched, my daughter seemed to manage them OK and they tasted great, very big birds as well. I heard you couldnt keep turkeys and chickens close together, anybody know any more about that? your right it will be goose for xmas day,  I helped a friend in a group of 10 of us kill and hand pluck 100 turkeys last week, and although it sounds pretty awful it was really good fun! Strange that , I feel it shouldnt have been but carols playing in the barn and lots of food with mulled wine etc, I will definately be up for doing it next year. A word of advise for anyone thinking of doing turkeys next year, the black norfolk bronze turkeys plucked much much easier than the white turkeys, I dont know why but there was a very big difference.
picking up pork tomorrow..........yippee!  :turkey:

We brought our turkeys from a couple that had them free ranging with old english game birds, they had a problem with the old english game cock attacking the stag's but nothing else! and the geese we got were kept with turkeys and chickens of various breeds and all seemed fine!

I think its something to do with worms from chickens passed to turkey causes blackhead.  But that may just be an old wives tale.  Its just something I had heard.
