Fodder beet seed
« on: February 21, 2011, 07:22:31 pm »
Hi - Would anyone be interested in a part pack of fodder beet seed.  The cheapest way to buy it is in an acre pack, but we don't need that much... If anyone wants some, I'll get it and split...  ;D

I'm in for some fodder beet too - anything to keep the feed prices down!

Right - I'll order an acre pack today and when it arrives will weigh it out.

Keep posting your interest and I'll let you know...

Agree - feed prices mad this year so we're looking to free up a bit of space to grow our own, at least we can lift it as we need it, and feed the tops too... Here's hoping it works!!!

If you want it in small amounts try http://www.suffolkherbs.com/kolist45/1/VEGETABLES/V-M/4/V228.htm

Thanks.
But I was really offering to buy some from Nina to enable her to buy in bulk without being left with an excess.

NO the tops are poisonous to pigs if eaten in quantity, we harvest ours and top them and feed the bulbs shredded to the smaller pigs and whole to some of the older stock. Not sure about sheep & cattle but all the beet heaps ihave seen are topped of greenery so beware.

Yes - Twas only looking to feed to the sheep - Won't be strip grazing it though, can't stand the sight of soaked, filthy store lambs - Though I guess they're full and warm from the inside... Just my opinion!  No pigs here (yet!) but handy to know, thanks!  And always needs feeding in moderation, especially when starting feeding it in the wintertime... Drunk, poorly sheep and cattle else...   :-\

And no, sorry won't be posting abroad...  :)

Hi - Seed arrived!!! I've weighed it out and if my calcs are right, you get about 1000 seeds for £1.50 incl postage, and £1 for every 1000 over that - Not sure I really want to sit and count them out but compared to £1.50 (plus p+p) for 400 seeds from Tuckers, not bad!

If you pm me how much you want and your address etc, I'll send it out.  Doesn't need sowing til end March so plenty of time - I'd prefer payment by paypal if possible but let me know if any problems...  Hopefully helped some people out - I don't mind being left with any as we've plenty of space and it may store to next year anyway...  :)
