Hello From Scotland
« on: February 09, 2011, 10:56:15 pm »
Hello everyone just stumbled across this wonderful site and so glad I did…..Wow so much information on here just what I was looking for. About us…..We have just moved into our new cottage a complete renovation project on Christmas eve and were 2.8 miles up a glen ( family think were bonkers) lol. Were situated on the borders of Fife and Perth…..Glentarkie.

We have 3 acres here and a barn that’s better than the cottage!!…perfect for our livestock needs and hopefully a poly tunnel . As for livestock we intend to keep a few Pigs and Sheep for the freezer just deciding on the breeds to keep definitely traditional hardy types , and more importantly how best to divide the land here.

Were not new to animal welfare and husbandry but have never kept pigs or sheep so looking forward to advice from those of you that can help…..I’m terribly impatient would love to have the livestock here just now but keeping  the old sensible hat on Id rather learn as much as possible first!!…-In advance apologies if I bombard the forum with heaps of questions…hopefully I can contribute in other areas also

Regards
Dave

Hello and welcome Dave from a bit further south in Scotland.  I'm sure we'll all have fun trying to convince you to keep our favourite breeds  ;D  www.scothebs.co.uk

Welcome, for sheep read up as much as you can on the sheep section the same for pigs.  Be warned though pigs are very addictive.

Welcome to the board, I am a newbie too and trying to learn as much as possible before buying some livestock this year. The forum and members are all really friendly and helpful, it's a great community. I am in West Lothian, and not completely new to animal husbandry, but never been wholly responsible for anything other dogs or horses, but Grandad was a smallholder, and I kept my horses on a dairy/sheep farm all my teenage years, and if you were around - you helped!

Hi guys thanks so much for your kind welcome to the forum and your words of advice, trust me all advice will be taken on board and much appreciated……….And sooooo many folk from Scotland!!.

Its been a hectic day here today sadly had to have 6 trees felled……we hated doing this but they were just too close to the house and blocked out so much light we couldn’t live with it………….And for our sins have been at the mercy of a raging bonfire until 1.30am today zzzzzzzzzz were needing our beds lol…..Having said that we have 8 ton of logs all cut and stored!

Thanks doganjo for your post re the forum and Tas website…….. its always good to know who is behind such good sites like this one and well done to them!!…..Fingers crossed were going to head across to Fishcross for 7pm .

Rosemary that’s a offer I cant resist lol………will pm you once ive worked out how too, thanks so much.

Thanks also to egglady (Laura) your so close and would love to visit when convenient…. and perhaps if you have time you could nip up here to Glentarkie and advise us on how best to set out the land?

Dave
