how many pig keepers in scotland
« on: February 04, 2011, 12:21:56 pm »
AS TITLE   some of you on here may already be aware of our efforts to bring pig classes back to Scottish shows
to enable us to progress this further  we are trying to quantify how many people keep pigs        registered with BPA or not             what breed
and if you would be interested in showing also how far you would travel to show your pigs assuming that we can get classes reintroduced
either post on here or pm does not matter if you are highlands islands or borders (this may also appeal to some in england as i do not want to discriminate)
happy hippy and princesspiggy we know you are interested

I only get a couple of large blacks now and again for the freezer, would love to breed but costs are just too high.

I have a share in 3 GOS x Saddlebacks, but they're for meat. Would be interested for future though.
In Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire.
Do crossbreeds get shown? Just interested.

Hi folks
We've got the Scottish Pig Keepers Association up and running now http://scottishpigs.co.uk for anyone wanting to get involved.

Stevie - to answer your question, no sorry !
Crosses can't be shown in competitive classes, only registered (and correctly ID'd as per BPA guidelines) pigs are able to be shown. It's all to do with being judged against a recognised 'breed standard', BPA rules and regulations I'm afraid  :-\ We hope, in time, to be able to have a 'pet' pig class where pet, crossed and unregistered pigs can be shown, but that will probably be next year once there is enough intrest and more shows are able to accommodate the pigs.
The more members and intrest we can attract the quicker it's likely to happen.

Very best of luck with this! Well done, y'all. Nice site too.

I remember pigs being at the Highland Show - looking forward to seeing them there again.

It's not been quite as long as 30 years- I can remember there being pigs shown there and I am only 30. My sister nearly absconded with Charles the pig man and that must have been about the time I was 7 or so.... Have no idea what his surname was, but my best friend still has his mug, nearly 25 years later. Those were the days, the pig guys were great fun, they use to come to our parties as the goats and pigs shared the same shed.

Would be good to have pigs back again.
