Hello from Bedfordshire
« on: January 07, 2025, 10:57:35 am »
Hi! I'm in Bedfordshire and looking to get back into smallholding-type activities. My partner does grow some veg every year and we have a few apple and pear trees with varying productivity, and he has previous experience with various poultry and goats. I have a lot less experience but, like everybody, we did get hens during Covid - these eventually died off and we just never replaced them but we're thinking of getting some again. I want to be able to help him with the veg to take some work off him and maybe grow a few things of my own.

I guess I struggle to know where to start. Can anybody recommend any good books or articles, ideally aimed at a total novice (I'm not one but this would help with getting started - kind of like smallholding for dummies!).

Sorry we've been a while welcoming you, usually an intro post comes up as a "new post" straight away but for some reason I've only just seen yours.

You will find lots of helpful articles on the site here, sounds like Goats would be one you'd want to explore, also Book Recommendations

Yes, welcome! Sorry we missed you. Grow stuff you like to eat. I used to go mad when the seed cataogues came out, seduced by the marketing. Now my veg plan is much simpler.

There's a good site called the Allotment Garden https://www.allotment-garden.org/ sign up for the newsletter. And grow comfrey - fab fertiliser, soil conditioner and compost activator.
