Fly strike.. next steps
« on: October 25, 2023, 01:07:54 pm »
I’ve just found my wether with fly strike on his back and rump….and sheared off his fleece totally then covered him with Barrier fly treatment. He’s looking very sorry and not eating… have I missed something? Anything else I should do?

UPDATE
had to call the vet out as he was going down hill fast…. She gave him an antibiotic and metacam for the pain, was touch and go that night…. Really thought we were going to lose him but he survived… we are having to wash him in diluted hibiscrub and spray with purple septic spray. We also set up an infra red lamp to keep him warm.
He’s now got this tough dry area…. Anyone use maggot oil to help keep the skin soft? or something else?

i usually give ours some metacam to ease the  pain and maybe a shot of alamycin in case of infection
It sounds like a major trauma he's had so lots of tlc needed

Maggot oil also tends to offer some relief from the itchiness

I would emphasise the antibiotic - this is one case where you don't hold back.  also the pain killer.
