So... we get our two Kune Kune pet pigs delivered later this week! What do people do about the poo? How do you dispose of it or what do you do to turn it into useful compost or fertiliser?

Pig dung is only a problem if you let it become slurry by adding water.  Otherwise it can be composted like any other animal manure, and spread the same way too.  We composted ours for a year and then spread it on the fields in winter. You are in control of parasites yourself so they need not be a problem.

If you have outdoor pigs and rotate the poo will just be washed into the ground. People don't generally poo pick pig pastures.

You might find you have to poo pick because of the smell. Pig poo stinks and I've read the reason it is so offensive is because it resembles humans'.


We had 20 pigs in the garden last week. Neighbours escaped because the electric fence energiser packed up. I picked up the poo and put it on the compost heap, but the smell was so bad I took it all out and buried it. It was also full of worm eggs.

Pigs usually choose a latrine area ie they poo in the same place. If you can pick a bit of poo off the trailer when they arrive (if they have done any) then throw it towards the back of the pen so they get the idea that's where they poo and they will continue to use it. It will break down over time and not be a problem smell wise at all. Pigs are very clean animals if given enough space and will not soil their sleeping area.
