Advice please! Newbies with an orphan lamb
« on: June 17, 2023, 07:54:22 pm »
Looking for advice please. We’ve recently taken custody of a ram lamb rejected by his Mum.

We are complete newbies at this!
He’s 5 days old now and he managed to get colostrum from his mum within the first 24 hours and has since been bottle fed on lamb replacement. He’s full of energy and mischief although does have some scouring.

My main questions going forward are
1. How long does he stay in the house with us?
2. Is it sensible to give him his milk room temperature to avoid Bloat?  Any tips to avoid this? I’ve seen mention of yoghurt, cold milk etc
3. Do we keep him intact or castrate him?
4. What company does he need?

We won’t be planning to keep him long term due to potential aggression so the idea is at the moment that he will end up for the freezer.

We do want to keep animals in our new property, a few sheep and chickens maybe, it’s just this little ram ended up here before any plans were set in place.
