Ewe loosing fleece
« on: May 02, 2023, 09:23:29 am »
Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can identify this from photos.

I’m on the north coast of Northern Ireland.  2nd year keeping sheep.

I’ve 8 ewes, seven of which have or are about to lamb.
Yesterday on the other ewe (not in lamb as far as I can tell and did not lamb last year)  I noticed she is loosing fleece on both flanks.  She is otherwise healthy as far as I can tell.  Not stressed, seems good weight, doesn’t seem extensively itchy.
This morning I brought her in and had a good slow look at both sides trying to see if there were any ‘creatures’ on her.  No sign at all.  Too early/ wet/ cold for flys but no sign of maggots anyway.

The images do show slight flaky material and one spot with a bit of scabbing maybe.

Image one is the slightly scab spot.
Image two trying to show the patchy nature of the loss
Image three shows how some of the fleece seems to be regrown
Image four bits in the wool and finger for scale.

Advice/ comments . . .
