Sheep shearer for 1 sheep - Perth area
« on: April 26, 2023, 08:50:41 pm »
Does anyone know of a shearer that would do just 1 sheep? It was missed last year and I'd like to get it sheared earlier than usual, well before the fly-strike season.

The costly bit about shearing small flocks if you don't do it yourself, is the palaver for the shearer of getting to you, getting set up etc, just for one sheep. It would not be cost effective. It might be easier to take your one sheep to the shearer rather than having her/him travel to you.  There could be problems with setting off someone's standstill.
Good Luck, sorry I can't help with a name.

Vh, if your sheep is fairly tame, it's honestly not too bad to do it yourself with hand shears - with the sheep standing up, even.

OK, you won't get a lovely even one-piece fleece off it, but if you view the objective as simply removing the wool as best you can, without stressing anybody out, it's really not too bad.

That's exactly what we did [member=2128]Womble[/member] . Bought a pair of double bow shears (easier on the hand) and clipped off her fleece bit by bit. Basically a quarter a day- she did look funny for the first three days!

The first time we took her a shearer who was doing a flock nearby, but movement regulations then made that too difficult.

If your sheep is a Shetland or Soay, you can roo it yourself, no tools needed.

I did my ewes last year (4 of them).
Don’t laugh but I used dog clippers!
Worked as well!
It wasn’t the nearest job in the world.
They look the same as the sheep I’ve bought that had been sheared professionally now (not at the time 🫢)

If your sheep is tame have a go yourself.

I’m investing in shears this year and doing it myself again. I have about 15 to do.
