Is there a best time to start with ducks? And how old?

We’re setting up to have a few ducks on our place.

I’m tossing up between POL or newly hatched… I know you need more equipment for chicks to keep them warm, but are there major pitfalls that should persuade me towards point of lay, given I’m not experienced with them yet.
My main reason for wanting chicks is actually because of our dogs. They will be fine with them but one dog tends to be triggered by sudden movement so I want to give both ducks and dog the best chance to get used to each other.

Second question, sort of related… does the time of year matter? Is it better to wait until spring? Would I not find ducklings or POL at certain times?

Wait till spring......  avian flu regs will have them housed all winter I've no doubt!

Don't wrestle with pigs, they will love it and you will just get all muddy.

Let go of who you are and become who you are meant to be.
