Just to say 'Hello'.
« on: December 05, 2010, 04:46:10 pm »
Hi.
Not a smallholder in the widest sense. My main interest lies with chickens.
I have a dozen hybrid hens (ex-battery and ex-barn refugees) plus a couple of little pure breed flocks in their first year. They are Scots Greys and Norfolk Greys and I hope they will be laying and ready for breeding next Spring.
All my birds have fiarly spacious wooden housing (recycled sheds) with attached runs.
Winter is hard at the moment and the pure breeds don't want to know the deep snow we have had.
Looking forward to finding my way around the forum and hope to share and learn a lot.

cheers

Hi there, Derbyshire, just across the Dove. Nood to ask what weather you're having. It's the same in the Moorlands. Thanks for the greeting

Welcome from a very cold Wee County in Central Scotland!  My ex batts and LS crosses are not straying further than 6 feet from their shed either, ducks were cold so have just cleaned them out and laid fresh straw.  Must manage to get the car out tomorrow though - need more straw.
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

Welcome to the site from north Wales.  Is that you on the bike?  My OH is a keen biker. He has been on the BMW rally to Ullapool this year and (irrationally in my opinion) on the Dragon rally the past few February's - camping in the snow in  Beddgelert, here in north Wales!!!  We keep chickens and a flock of polled Dorset sheep.

Hi and welcome Moorlander.

My hens only went back outside yesterday after I dug out an area for them to scratch in. Our layer's weren't quite as fussy as my pure bred hamburg bantie's.

Welcome from Brittany, my older brahams wouldnt come out of their house during the snow, had to ferry food and water in to them, the younger ones moved into the barn during the day, but the layers were out regardless scratching up the snow.   :D

Hello from South Devon  No snow to speak of here yet but bitterly cold. My hens, ducks and bantams get a bowlful of warm porridge these freezing mornings and, I think, appreciate it!
