Hi we got two weaners to fatten and the breeder tagged them when we picked them up
Just booked them into the abbatoir - do we need to tag them again with our number (so they'll each have two tags) or can we take them bearing the original breeders tags ? tia

We've always just sent them under the original breeder's tags and it's been fine.

To be sure, ask the abbatoir.

Whenever I bought weaners, the breeder never tagged them, used marker spray instead. I bought metal Ketchum tags for the dirty deed, which were put in the night before, if they were nice pigs, or the day they went if they werent.

They should move with your tag. It really wasn't necessary for the previous owners to tag as they were under a year of age and between holdings only needed a temporary paint mark. It is a bind to remove tags at this stage so just move them under the herdmark they have on their tags. The abattoir wont have a problem. It would be eaml2 that could pick up on this but I very much doubt they will. The key thing is that the pigs are traceable, which they are. Next time tell the vendor you don't want tags.
