Battles Ovaloid Capsules for Sheep to prevent Orf
« on: May 04, 2022, 04:13:08 pm »
Last year some of my sheep got Orf picked up at a show.  This year I intend to administer Ovaloid Capsules.  The applicator for administering them is very long.  What is the safe way to use it without puncturing the back of the sheep's/ lamb's throat?

I’m not sure they would prevent it, it is a virus. Though whoever took sheep to a show with orf needs a stern talking to. Now your sheep have got it, it will be on your land, so it’s just a case of living with it. Brinnicombe Frobut buckets are very good at controlling it.

I wasn't aware that the capsules prevented orf? I thought they helped recovery from orf. You don't need an applicator. You just put the capsules into the back of the mouth and make sure they don't spit it out.

It will be on the hurdles etc that are in use at the show, especially if they still use wooden hurdles. Also a good place to pick up the likes of Johnes etc. if the show is on what normally is a grazed field...

However orf is not somehting to be massively concerned about, I have it sporadically coming to in both the sheep and the goats (sheep don't mix with the goats and never go to shows, goats go to shows all summer). If given good nutrition they will get over it fairly quickly, only time to watch is when it is on ewes' udders and then causes mastitis...

Don't think anything can prevent it...

Not necessarily.  Once orf is on your land, you can vaccinate with Scabivax.  It works.
