Lamb losing fleece from tail
« on: April 17, 2022, 08:48:33 am »
I was hoping someone could help me work out what could cause a lamb to lose a band of fleece from it's tail? She's a 5 week old Balwen, bottle fed with access to creep and we had been starting to let her out into the field with the rest of the flock for a few hours per day. She's one of orphaned twins, when not in the field they are kept in our stock trailer with straw bedding in a small penned patch of grass. I can't see any issues with the other lambs or ewes.

No obvious scabbing or mites, rest of fleece looks fine. When my OH brushed her tail with his fingers more just easily came away.

Any ideas really appreciated, if this may be infectious I obviously don't want it to spread  :'(

That's what I'm planning if I can't work out what it is, bad luck for issues to crop up on a bank holiday weekend

Some years ago I had a cade lamb losing fleece, I looked through all the books, online, worried about alsorts of possibilities, but as skin looked healthy, just kept her warm and fed. Ended up with a bald lamb. Then saw the tiniest bit of regrowth. She grew out just fine.
All I could think of was stress, though she came with another who was fine.
