Ewe lost lamb - drying up
« on: March 22, 2022, 10:42:52 am »
I had a ewe that lost her lamb on Saturday a few hours after he’d been born. He had sucked and had felt full but on checks I found him flat out and cold and he later died.
I’ve kept the ewe in on hay and water only. I was hoping to put her outside today to get her out the shed but checking her udder it feels firm and not slackened off at all (which is what I think it should do?) Saturday it was softer. It is warm, but I don’t know that it’s any warmer than it should be if that makes sense. She didn’t seem to mind me touching and the two sides felt equal with no lumps. I have seen her on the shed camera sit on her bum and nuzzle at her udder, I don’t think she’s chewing her teats, but almost like she’s itching it. I imagine it maybe uncomfortable as it’s tight. I’m always worried about mastitis and have zero experience of it in the flesh. Should I keep her in till it loosens off a bit? Or pop her back out in the field and keep an eye on her?

Keep her in on hay or straw to eat. It will take a week to 10 days to loosen and start drying up.
