[Wannabeesmallholder]

Hello I'm new.. Well in truth I've been lurking and reading the vast wealth of information on here for weeks. So I thought I better join 

 I don't have a smallholding.. But hope to one day get one. I have a small garden in Nottinghamshire that I grow veg in (sometimes successfully.. Sometimes not)
 
I'm quite interested in one day keeping Pigs, My great grandfather was a pig farmer/smallholder on a council owned plot in otley yorks, So have very faint but happy memories of that from being a very small child. Sadly as he died the next generation were more into well other careers.. I often say to my mother "oh what could have been" Alas thats life. 😄

Anyway apologies if I am rambling. I hope to learn lots from reading the wonderful posts on this site 👍

Welcome, [member=215350]Wannabeesmallholder[/member].  For some reason your intro post didn't pop up on my "Unreads" until today, so apologies we have been a while welcoming you to TAS. 

Your "what might have been" thoughts hit a chord for me.  My ex partner was always wrestling with how he could secure the farm that he and his father built from scratch when the next generation was not interested in  taking it on themselves - but knowing as he did what it took to start from nothing, he couldn't bear the idea that one of his grand nephews or grand nieces may one day be saying how they wished that Mum and Dad had been able to keep Great Uncle's farm going for them. 

But at least they, like you, have a raft of precious memories of times spent on the farm, and who knows what any of them may be inspired to do one day.  (And thanks to my being there for some years, those memories do include free range pigs and hand-milking Jersey cows.  lol.)

You don't get approved here [member=215350]Wannabeesmallholder[/member] , you just join in. Welcome from me. We stared with a small garden as you (in Derbyshire) and had successes and failures. It's all about knowing your soil and your climate. Believe it or not the only time you can plant grass seed here is September- it needs time to root to survive the Summer heat. Otherwise you would have to water it and water is in very short supply, just when you need it.
