Lamb sounding a bit chesty/raspy
« on: March 10, 2022, 08:56:21 am »
I have a lamb born Monday night. Has been fine but noticed today her breathing sounds a bit raspy and burbly. Her sister is fine.
Drinking from Mum, poohing and weeing okay. Temp is 38.83. Is active. No runny nose. Poss small sticky bit of mucus though. I was going to put them out today but keeping them in.
I’ve given her some kickstart for now. Any advice on what to do next? Just monitor her today?? I have Alamycin but no temp so not sure this would help…

Keep a watch for now , checking temp and if you can see any struggle breathing  then AB fast , maybe just phone your vet for reassurance  .

Thanks Shep. I’ve asked for a call back from the vet. She seems well in herself otherwise and is jumping around the shed. Really want to get her out into the fresh air as don’t like them in too long but it’s a bit damp and weather’s meant to be rotten tomorrow.
Where do you inject AB into a lamb? I know how to do sub cutaneous but lambs have no muscle and I’m afraid I’d poke needle straight through her  ???

Injection site is the same as adults and yes it seems daunting in the neck but it is only a tiny amount  eg   Alamycin   0.5ml    so smaller syringe  eg 2ml

I’ve only ever done it in the bum before ! I started in the groin which is what the vet showed me first time. Never done it in the neck. Appreciate why it’s best to do it there. I’ll see if I can get someone to show me.
I spoke to the vet who said if fine in every other way to give her a shot of metacam. Went and picked it up whilst I was out anyway, got back and she’s not making the noise any more! Typical, but obvs good. Vet said she could’ve aspirated fluid from birth but only noticed it today. Maybe from having a drink but thought that was mainly only bottle fed lambs? Anyhow, I think I’ll keep her in for now just to make sure she’s okay.
