been advised to give hot water in mornings ( so i thought why not at night is well )
anyway how hot is hot??
surely cold water has to go in is well?

Yes Langdon- not too hot. Warm is fine. You want it so it isn't too hot for you to stick your hand in the bucket. I usually only give warm water for a treat, or if one isn't well, but thats because we have too many to easily give them hot water all the time.

Isn't it true that hot or warm water freezes quicker than cold though?

 I seem to have spent all weekend trudging out in the snow to defrost the animals! my neighbour reckoned it was -10 but I refuse to check (it is as cold as it feels if you ask me)  I did however measure the depth of the snow as husband was insisting it is deeper than it is...

Isn't it true that hot or warm water freezes quicker than cold though?

the water vapour will freeze, it has a small surface area, so in closed container like a poultry drinker, or water bottle will freeze faster.

I have a sink full of the guinea pig & rabbit bottles that are literally frozen solid, since being done and refilled this morning.
I've run out of spares, they are all in use or defrosting in a never ending cycle!

Our goats & pigs are getting warm water, once I ve broken the ice everyday

Deep littering the goats helps, the build up of dung makes it warmer, and because we have 15 in the goat shed, their water doesn't freeze easily. That said, it was -16 this morning with us....

I gave mine warm water last winter on the really cold days and they did like it and with them staying in and eating hay all day seemed the right thing when practically possible - maybe their next upgrade should be a kettle in the goat shed!!!
