On Autumn watch tonight they mentioned some vast number (which I have already forgotten) of birds migrating to the UK this winter.  Pleeease lets not have another winter lockdown for our poultry - I really don't want hens in my polytunnel this time around. More to the point, I'm sure no-one else wants Avian Influenza in their poultry either.  I so love watching the geese flying over in the autumn, but I'm quite pleased when they go again in spring.

Seems to be way more geese locally this year. I’ve cut back on my birds but can really do without another bird lock down, both from a personal and professional POV.

There has been a case reported in Wales now. I'm sure there will be a lockdown at some point, I just hope it's not before we've processed all our Christmas turkeys as I don't want to have to put them inside. They've been free ranging outside all their life (bar early days in the brooder) and won't take kindly to being stuffed in a shed

All of my preparations are still in place from last time.. nets.. disinfectant.. pest control..  documentation etc
Even so I hope there will be no lockdown.

Lockdown inevitable I would have thought especially as first 2 cases are in West not East of country .....  maybe time to dispatch a few poorer ones?

So no lockdown yet, but new rules from 5pm today https://www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu  Looks the same as last year's recomendations.

I like the government website information - very clear and with a self assessment checklist - no excuses not to comply with the regulations.

I have triggered an action plan to ensure all poultry keepers on our allotment site fill in a self assessment form - unlike last year when the law was basically disregarded. 

This particularly annoyed me because it put my birds at risk of being culled.

Iam down to only 2 hens. I did think of taking on more rescue hens but decided against it as I thought we may get word of bird flu again. My 2 girls are now in the small hay barn and quite happy.

Had animal health again today for proper inspection. Happy enough. She stressed that I need to get in touch at the first sign of ill health and then said: “The first sign will probably be very high mortality”. Which I didn’t realise, I thought there would be a bit more discharge and sad hens to look out for. Still all looking great so far and we’ve no neighbours with stock so I’m hopeful we’ll be ok.
They don’t have to be housed at present, just not free ranging.

I see there's a case in Lancashire confirmed today so I expect there will soon be a lockdown.  Last year it was mid-December til April 1st.
