Where,s the abattoirs gone?
« on: August 04, 2021, 08:32:26 pm »
Not had pigs for a few years starting to realize that the abattoirs have gone.
Used to go to Mathewson Jess and have them butchered at Robertson’s of brought ferry, then Dunblane and back to Robertson’s.
Where do people go now that is happy to take private kills and what are they like.
Liked Dunblane as pigs usually got to go straight through the lair to the killing line and were often being worked on as I was completing the paperwork in the office.

There was an abattoir in Galashiels that took pigs, but their main slaughterman was seriously injured by a wild boar, was off for months and eventually the abattoir had to close down.
The lack of nearby slaughter houses for pigs was one of the reasons we stopped keeping them.
I have heard that there are moves afoot to reintroduce small abattoirs but that's little comfort if you have pigs ready to go.

Wishaw or Shotts might be your closest?
Haven't used them for pigs for a while but Wishaw took private kill sheep last year.

Of those two, I prefer Shotts for small private kills, if they still do pigs (we take sheep).  Wishaw is a bit big and heartless  :coat:
