How much fluid to rehydrate lamb
« on: April 14, 2021, 04:49:06 pm »
I'v got a 30hr old lamb not doing well. Have had shots from the vet and have got some Hydrion which says 50ml twice a day (5ml Rehydion made up to 50ml with tepid water).

I am assuming that I need to give the lamb other fluids in the meantime.

She is a little bit brighter but still lying and quiet most of the time although I did notice her give Mum's teat a little butt this afternoon.

Should she be getting 50ml water an hour with just the 50ml Rehydion twice a day?

I would be nervous about giving her powdered milk.  I have milked Mum a bit this morning just to keep heer from getting too full.

Did the vet not advise? I would milk off some from the dam and tube feed the lamb - I guess the vet gave AB's? I would probably give 50 to 100ml (depending on size of lamb) every three hours or so. If the lamb has sucking reflex, then bottle (with milk/colostrum milked out from the ewe) would be better. As long as the milk going into the lamb is the dam's own, she will let it suckle once it gets strong enough.

Did the lamb get any colostrum?

Are you saying the lamb was scouring , so the vet gave AB'S and rehydrion  for a couple of feeds but as Anke says it needs mothers milk  roughly 50ml per kg of weight  per feed and  4 feeds  per day , it will get no nutrition from water

As above, but when I’ve used rehydion I’ve gone with the instructions to mix 20ml/litre water, generally I give 100ml per feed so 2ml per 100ml water (for lleyns so a commercial size lamb). Alternate rehydion and milk feeds every 4 hrs.

She seems to be back on Mum again so fingers crossed.
