Good news!

Heard our first chiff chaff yesterday here in Powys. No sign of our swallows yet but I'll be keeping a look out then.

Wow! That's brilliant. I have never seen them before April. Isn't nature wonderful at this time of year?

Have seen two now. Feel as if Spring is finally here - but there is a threat of snow here next week. Nature is wonderful but so fragile. Our barn is open but I hope they can keep warm and eat.

Seen swallows at one of our neighbours about 1/2 mile down the hill ..... but none here yet. We usually have one which arrives up to 2 weeks before the rest ... so dont know where that one is this year.  :(

They should arrive any day now, although the weather in Europe has been against them.

We are still waiting for the female osprey Aila to arrive at Loch Arkaig, along with 9 other female ospreys and 8 males from watched nests, which have not got back yet.  There are reports of various ospreys travelling up the country, just as there are swallows  :fc:   On the other hand, ospreys which arrived earlier are already laying their eggs.

Our first swallows arrived today. Probably have  a shock when they find I had fitted a new LED strip light in the stable where they always nest on top of the old strip light fitting. Nice to have them back.

Saw the 1st one flying about the other evening but it's not one of 'mine'. still waiting - will probably have at least a couple more frosts though and insects are still pretty thin on the ground here.

heard my first cuckoo on the same day.

Apparently, insect numbers everywhere have plummeted, so we can expect insect-eating bird numbers to drop accordingly, or at least for them to congregate near water and damp places. Hopefully they can adapt in time to survive with a slightly different diet.

Still no swallows here, although Mr F did spot some in Dumfries and Galloway the other day, so our fingers are crossed.

The usual female Osprey Aila that came to the Loch Arkaig nest has not returned this year sadly and the male Louis has hooked up with another female on a nest without a camera. So Ospreys still breeding, just not the female we know and love  :(
