Shetland Cattle for sale, Sutherland
« on: January 31, 2021, 11:03:18 am »
Hello all

We are sadly having to cut down our herd numbers due to changing circumstances, having built up and selectively bred for six years for calm milkers. Our dream was to have a small dairy one day, and we will get there eventually, but for now it's best these cows go to homes that will use them for that potential while we sort life out a bit!

Our little herd will make the ideal starter herd for someone. We have Tom who is due to calf any day, Una who is cuddly and would make a perfect house cow, Eddie a heifer and Greibidh and Magnus, two castrated boys who will grow to be ideal eaters.

A little about Shetlands
We bought into the Shetland cows when we started for their hardiness, rare breed status and ability to be milked as well as make good meat cows. The cross calves also grow more quickly than normal crosses and sell well at the mart. We were breeding pure every other year to keep the gene pool. We've found the meat from our AA x shetland was supremely marbled and utterly delicious when hung properly and slaughtered at 2yo.

Una - 6 years old
Una is one of the most cuddly cows I have ever met. She will run over to you in the field and put her head down for you to scratch around her ears and face. She is the queen of the herd and she has a fantastic temperament with humans. Very food orientated, so it's easy to move her around! We have milked from her before by hand and with a milking machine. Never had a problem calving with her at all.

She was our first calf born on the croft and very dear to us! She is not registerable as a pure Shetland as there was some hiccup possibly 5 or 6 generations back in her lineage, but she is for all intents and purposes a pure shetland. She was sired by St Trinians Baloo.

Eddie - born 12/7/19
Eddie is Una's daughter and a corking wee heifer. She was sired by Rogiavi Hamlin and shows all the characteristics of her mum and grandmum in temperament, very friendly and calm heifer. She has good confirmation and has done well through the winter.

Tomasina - 10 yrs old
Tom is one of the first cows we bought down from Shetland from Ronnie Eunson at Uradale farm. She has always done us well with a good confirmation and a high udder. She's a registered Shetland and has given us some cracking calves with never an issue during calving. We did find she is not the best for milking, but is a steady and reliable cow to have around otherwise.

Tom is due to calve in the next couple of weeks so sbe will come with a calf at foot. She is in calf to Geldrom Faddom so the calf will be pure Shetland.

Greibidh - born 30/08/20 and Magnus - 08/03/20
Greibidh is a castrated Aberdeen Angus cross from Una, he will grow into a fine bullock with prime meat. Our last AAxShetland went to slaughter at 2yrs old and the meat was dark, marbled and utterly beautiful. It also fetched a good price to one of our local restaurants.

Magnus is a pure bred castrated Shetland in the same bracket as Greibidh. Perfect for growing on for slaughter. He's a quiet chap who seems quite content with life generally.

Please email lu.norval@gmail.com for details on price, lineage etc. We are based in Rogart, about an hour North of Inverness but we can sort national transport.

I'll upload some pics in a mo (internet is playing up) but you can visit our facebook page at @CorryMeadow for other info.

Pic 1 is Tom this morning, pic 2 is Tom in the summer. Pic 3 is Una and Greibidh. Pic 4 - it’s very hard to get a photo of Una because the second you go in the field she comes up for cuddles!!
