Adding new CPH/Flock Numbers
« on: October 10, 2020, 01:39:54 pm »
Hi all,

My father in law has moved to nearby village and his property came with 8 acres. He wants us to graze it with our sheep, so when we enquired about adding it to our holding we were first told he would need to register the land himself. He's done that now and has his CPH. So we assumed we could now just add this to our holdings list, but I've now read that we may need a new flock number too?

I assumed I would have two different holding registers but 1 flock number? I figured people who rent land will know what to do! We are in Scotland. I will call Inverurie next week, although trying to get hold of them is difficult at the moment!

Thanks all.

The flock number goes with the holding for sheep - so if you have lambs born at your Dad's, you'll need tags with the flock number for that holding.
Cattle herd numbers apply across holdings.

As Rosemary says, you can graze your sheep there no problem, just make sure they don't lamb there. I use a neighbour's field for grazing, but always bring the girls home to lamb on my own CPH. He doesn't have a flock number, only his CPH. I normally have sheep on his land when the census is due, so they go under his CPH number.

If YOU have a CPH number, and the field you want to use is less than 10miles away (as the crow flies), then you can add the land to your CPH with a TLA (Temporary Land Association) which would last for 12 months, then renewable if desired.
I only know this as I'm having to do it with smaller bits of land I'm grazing at the moment - so not being smart!
It might not solve all the problems, but will get you grazing quite quickly, without worrying about people reporting you...
Just my 2 cents :-)

Thanks all. I was able to get the new flock number from APHA within 24 hours, so that was fine. All going through process of being linked with ours officially in rural payments etc, but paper trail is in place now at least.
