Are you two in foreign parts with more light than us in GB?  I'm still not having any luck except the occasional ex batt one, which I make a point of always saying thank you for :-)  No method of getting light to the sheds except over hanging on branches from either the garage or the houes.

One a day here in Normandy - two if we are lucky with about 30 pol running around.  I have been told though that if you put a flourescent light in their house, they will lay really well.  I haven't done this, but know people who have and they are over run with bantums - 30 hatchlings which are now growing fast, and more eggs than they can cope with.

Has anyone else tried this? :chook: :chook:

most of my friends have been complaining about lack of eggs this year although usually the day after I visit, they start laying, guess I must scare them! The twenty ex freerange farm ones I got last week are all laying plus my little hamburgs, the ross's are only laying every other day at the moment but that is because they had to be put in a run as they were chasing Meep, the chick.

We're hardly getting any now - two or three a day from about20 hens. I know some are past laying and are pensioners, so I'm not too bothered. Getting the odd Maran one which is nice.

your lucky i will have a lot of free range hens soon from my brain i know it takes 26 hours to produce an egg  it the hens cycle they would aslos need a minimum of 10 hrs of light for that cycle to work

I took apart one of those cheap solar powered driveway/garden lights, extended the cable so the solar panel was outside facing south and put the light inside the coop. It's only giving light til about 10 at night because of the shorter days now,but I'm still getting 3 eggs a day from 3 chickens (and every other day,a double yoker).

We are still getting 5 eggs from 5 chickens most days.  Last week we only had 3 eggs 3 days running, then we found two little "nests" under the hay rack in the goats pen with 3 eggs in each.  Have since put hay in the nesting boxes and extra chicken wire to stop them flying over into the goats pen!  Had straw in their nest boxes (2) before, wonder if they were feeling a bit cold?

Well, that IS bragging - so what breed are these wonder layers then?  We all want to know. I might try that solar light idea though.  I hadn't thought of that, very clever.

Dogandjo am in Brittany its wet and horrible most of the time lately.  Its only the Aylesbury ducks who are laying well.  12 hens 1 or 2 eggs a day on average although yesterday I had 7 best egg total in at least 18 months.  I will probably not get another egg for at least a week after that marathon.   I think its the weather.  No summer!
