new ground?
« on: October 14, 2010, 07:51:00 pm »
our second lot of pigs are due in the abbatoir on the 22nd of next month, my question ere is
can we put more pigs back on that same plot?
we dont have anywhere else to put them if we get more.
or does the ground now need rest after say 12 months of pigs been on it?
thanks for any replys ;)

If you can't rotate a bit of ground make sure you're always up to date with worming.

No chance of the grass on that patch ever recovering then, is there?  :D

As Eve said, if your up to date with worming it should be okay - even better if you rest it til springtime  ;)
What sort of size of ground is it ? Would it be possible to resitrict them to half of it now and level and reseed the other half (if it's totally churned up) that way you've got some good ground ready for spring and just do the other half once the pigs go or in the spring, depending on the weather.

As long as you have kept the worming up to date it should be ok, but I'd leave as long as possible before getting the next pigs in to give the ground a bit of a chance to recover.

Regular worming although very necessary does bring its own problems for the soil.  If you can possibly rest the ground until spring it would be best.

Hey Langdon - does this mean you aren't having to leave your smallholding?

we are hoping to be here till next march anyway, i know that would be approx 3mths for the last 3mths i was going to ask me freind if
i could put them on his ;)
but looking at it really i dont think i will be getting any more while we are here, i wana leave that ground grassy when we go.
