Looking for hay Moray/Aberdeenshire
« on: December 27, 2018, 05:27:29 pm »
Hi, does anyone know where I can get hay in the Moray/Aberdeenshire area at a reasonable price? My usual supplier has really ramped his prices up, I know it is dearer this year but I'm sure I can get cheaper elsewhere.  Thanks.

Can I ask how much they are asking? £30 seems average around Huntly.

I heard one of the hay dealers was buying in at £40.  It'll be re-baled to small bales and sold on to the equestrian set, but I know he was looking for more so if you can get decent quality at £30, I'd grab it!

I'd be happy at £40 and ecstatic at £30, I'm being charged £50 per bale.

That's closer to the mark for what I've heard in this area too Tony; the £40 was the electronic sale a couple of months ago and I think it was something like 500 bales at that.  He reckoned others had stopped bidding, thinking that he'd only take some of the bales and they could then come in with lower price bids for the balance, but he took the lot.

There's an expectation that when the weather turns in mid January the price will go up further too.

Problem is that so much of the silage was fed early due to the dry summer, few people have sufficient excess to sell on.

Thanks for that Goatherd, I called him but he's really only interested in large loads.
