Getting ewes clean for the tup
« on: September 18, 2010, 07:41:53 pm »
There's been some discussion about crutching (dagging?) ewes prior to going to the tup.

Is it worth giving their back ends a good wash?

Hopefully giving a vitamin drench in a couple of days

Clean bums are nicer and healthier, poor old chap if he has a lot of girls to serve with thick wool and green backsides. I think it is a good housekeeping habit to regularly dag them out, always at slaughter too.
Enjoying life making the most of whats available. My kids were little yesterday, today they are almost adults, where on earth did that change happen?

It's worth dagging them even if they aren't dirty. It would put me off if I had to mate a dirty back end..You'd need to get Daddymatty in to do the tupping :D

We only crutch anything that is particularly dirty. Some rams are rather ticklish and find the short trimmed wool a bit prickly.

Crutched up and cleaned now gives the girls time to get a bit of wool back in time for lambing. It's easier for the lamb to get to the milk without fighting it's way through crap stained wool.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the help!  In the end, we gave her some Peptobismol...about 3ml, as she decided to try to wear the rest.  She is now fully better, just waiting for a chance to get her in and cleaned up.  Its a bit relief!
