pygmy goat problem with leg
« on: August 25, 2017, 11:50:05 pm »
I have 3 pet pygmy goats. 1 has had a limp for about 6 weeks. When he first started I looked at his foot but couldn't find any problem but still sprayed with purple spray. I thought it would sort itself out as he was still butting with his friend Sid and doing all his normal stuff.  As time has gone on he now holds his leg up and out slightly at an angle, but walks with a limp.  Ive checked his leg many times nothing seems to hurt him he doesn't flinch or yelp at my touch at all.  Has anyone any ideas what the problem can be and how I might help him before getting a vet out to him. Thanks

Sounds like he needs the vet if it's been going on for six weeks.

Is he old?
Got caught on a fence jumping?
A thorn in his pad?
What feed does he have?
Laminitis?
Hoof?  Joints? Muscles?

You could save the call out fee by taking him to the vet.

Thanks for your help.  Ive had him for about 6 years and know him very well he has been to the vets a couple of times with tummy troubles but sadly that surgery has stopped taking farm animals now.  He hasn't got worse over the weeks and does all his normal dippy things. I checked his hoof again all fine no smell at all,  doesn't mind if I
press anywhere only thing poss was I got a little click when I bent his knee?!  I am going to get the vet out to him!

It's been awfully wet recently so could be scald. I would try spraying with Terramycin as that works much better on scald than purple spray.
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.

Wouldn't scald show up as scaly/sore looking skin around the coronary band or around the pastern/fetlock hollows of the heels and between the toes?

it is generally only between the toes
