Ex batts life span
« on: July 03, 2010, 12:03:04 am »
Found another one of our ex batts dead today in the hut, thats 2 in 10 days, sadly wasnt me who found it, it was our son who had gone to collect the eggs, had noticed nothing strange with any of the hens,we got about 40 of them about a year ago and this is the first losses,is it just nature or should i be worried so close together all the others are drinking/feeding as normal.

Its probably just coincidence.  I have a lot of ex battery hens running free range.  Some I got 4 years ago, are just dying off now, which is a good life span.  But on the other hand, I have noticed that some of them go very quick with no warning, and then another will follow.
Thinking about it, they lay and lay in the farms, so assuming they are 15 months when they come out, plus another year, thats probably about right, given their workload.

Yup. I think it just the luck of the draw!  In my previous home I had had some ex batts for about 2 years, re-homed them when I moved here 2 years ago and a couple of them are still going.  I got 6 about 6 months after I moved and another 4 about 6 months later - I have two of the first lot and one of the second lot left - not all sudden deaths though - Hester got three of them.  One was obvious pneumonia, the other 3 were unknown demises.
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age
