Hi all.  We have a Lleyn ewe 5 yrs old that went down hill a couple of months ago, with AB's, vit drenches etc  she made a recovery.  However she is still very thin, has self weaned her lambs (not surprisingly) and often has a stained green lower jaw which is presumably her cud spilling out.  We checked her teeth and there is nothing obviously wrong there.  She grazes well and looks bright enough.  Any ideas what could (cud??) be causing this please?

I had a ewe that developed listeriosis and although she recovered eventually her only remaining symptom was cud spilling....

Thank you - but she didnt show any other symptoms of Listeriosis.

Did you check her molars as well as the front teeth?  She is very young to be losing molars, but that has been a cause of cud spilling in some of our ancient ladies.

She may have some kind of obstruction that stops her swallowing correctly ....?

We had one withi an abcess in his jaw did this.  Sadly he never came right

Iv'e seen quite a few cud spillers, and sorry but despite all treatments  I think all of them ended badly , if I see one , if ok they go as quickly as possible  .    SEVERE  cud spillers leave little oval shaped lumps of grass on the ground .    You could try  a different AB  for longer to try and solve any molar /gum /jaw problem

Her green lower jaw could just be grass staining from eating if you haven't seen her drop cud or spit out.  If it is through dropping cud I would suspect back teeth problem. Hope it ends well for you

Hi all sorry for not replying had a day off at the Yorkshire show today:-)


We will check her teeth again , she doesn't seem ill at all,but  if she doesnt come right she will be on the one way bus!
