New o geese
« on: May 14, 2016, 07:09:40 pm »
we collected a ready made family of geese last week. We have just 3 goslings of 2 weeks and they and parents are already happy, or at least compliant, with the directions I give them when I take them on a walk to pastures new.
They are Toulouse geese.
I have read various recommendations as to when they are ready to eat. One articles said 10 and others 12 or 20 weeks. All tell you to avoiide a couple of weeks post moult because of the nightmare of plucking.

Any suggestions when I should fatten them up on grains and when they are suitable to eat?

Ours go between 24 and 28 weeks. Rough rule of thumb is to feed them grain for the first 6 weeks and the last 6 weeks. We also feed a few growers pellets at the end of the day to encourage them to go into the goose house. It also makes them more biddable. They will follow us anywhere so long as we are carrying a bucket a feed. :)

We have Brecon Buff x Pilgrim and at the moment they only get grass during the day (3 weeks old and under mesh cover outside) and some grower pellets at night time (in shed under heat lamp), these are incubator hatched. No idea how quicly Toulouse grow, but ours will go until sometime late November - mid December ready to eat for Xmas.

If you feed to high a protein diet early on they can develop "angel wing", which doesn't stop them from being ok to eat, but not too good in general for them.
