Mixed twins
« on: April 29, 2010, 03:34:31 pm »
Hello, as you know we are relatively new to sheep and just wanted to ask this question. We have noted that freemartins do occur in other species making the bubs infertile, does this occur in sheep?  as we have had two mixed sets of twins, thanks in advance

Not sure about sheep, but I had a billy and nanny kid some years ago, and we could not breed from the nanny. I know the farmer who had cows on our land, had a cow who always had twins.  He never kept the heifer from a mixed twining, but this year kept both the female calves. He said he had done it once, and not managed to breed from the female of the twins.

Sheep are fine. Given the number of twins, it's just as well really.
