Not that I really want, or need any more, but never mind. My friend was in a bit of a state, so I could not refuse.
Friend has horses, and used to have a hen and cockerel roaming about until a fox helped himself one afternoon. Just recently she has been looking at my hen flock and said she would like some more. Two weeks ago she got a lovely RIR cockerel and 4 ladies with him. They were free ranging in the horses field during the day and in at night. On Saturday she got 6 silkie chicks and two white sussex bantam chicks, which were living in a stable with a half door, until big enough to free range.
Well, yesterday one of the livery girls arrived at 3pm and was met by a fox on the stable yard. She rushed round and checked the rabbit in its hutch, that was ok, so were the chicks. Unfortunately she arrived just too late to save any of the RIR's. So Alison rang me to ask if we could take the silkies and sussex as she could not risk keeping them. Went down last night, and when she said chicks, the silkies are just that. I think she bought them all together, but 4 of the silkies are not very old, two are a fair bit larger. I did think of cockerels for those two, but they would not be that much bigger at that age, so I assume they are from a different hatch. The two sussex banties look about 10 weeks old. I was a bit worried that the silkies had been on heat, but Alison just had them in the stable and they had coped. Its been frosty a few nights here, and last night they were cheeping which made me think they were cold. I covered the coop with a big sack, and they huddled together.
