20 day standstill numpty question
« on: October 19, 2015, 04:05:44 pm »
Feel a bit thick, we don't normally get into standstill situations as we don't have a huge amount of movements and do have an approved isolation unit, so I've never needed to ponder this before.

We had a sow come on to visit our boar on Wed 14th October.  When does our 20 day standstill end?  I don't know whether to count the day she arrived and/or the day she leaves to go home/young pigs go to new home or not! Thank you!

Standstill starts the minute she arrives so you should start the count from that point. So if she arrived at 10.30 on the 14th she shouldn't leave before that time on her day of departure. I have known people be pulled up for allowing an off movement literally a couple of hours too early. I think that's why a lot of pig people think 3 week standstill/21 days.

it comes under part 2 article 5 of the Disease Control Order (England) 2003 - similar laws exist for Wales and Scotland

Article 5 states

5.  No person shall move a pig from any premises if—
(a) any pig has been moved on to those premises during the previous 20 days; or
(b) any cattle, goats or sheep have been moved on to those premises during the previous 6 days.

So you can move your pig from midnight on the 21st Day

yes correct, you can move to slaughter at any time.

Article 6 says

6.  Notwithstanding articles 4 and 5, animals may be moved off premises during the standstill period if—
(a) the movement is one specified in Schedule 1; or
(b) a permit disapplying the standstill period has been issued by a veterinary inspector.

and amongst other things Schedule 1 has :

Movement for slaughter
2.  The movement of an animal direct to a slaughterhouse.
3.  The movement of a pig to a market for pigs intended for immediate slaughter.
4.  The movement of an animal to a collecting centre for animals intended for immediate slaughter, provided that— (a)the collecting centre premises have not been and will not be used on the same day for a show or exhibition or for the sale or trading of animals otherwise than for immediate slaughter; and
(b)all animals moved to the collecting centre are moved from there direct to a slaughterhouse.

Thanks everyone, I felt really daft, I had all the guidance, but just couldn't work out how to count the 20 days.  I am on a very tight time arrangement, as I need to get the sow home and some young pigs away, then bring a young boar on to go into isolation with some gilts to get on a ferry to Ireland on 5th December, my brain is going to be totally scrambled by then. I have a one day window for 'offs'!

It'll not help this time but apply for an approved isolation facility. It's free, not difficult and will really help at times like this  ;)
I'll see if I can find the link and email it to you or post it here - but google should find it.

If you think of standstill days as "clear days" it helps.  So you need 20 (or 6) clear days between the ON and the OFF (and that obviously doesn't include the ON or OFF days themselves).
I just mark it on my calendar like so - day 0=ON movement, cross off the next 20 days, then the next day is the OFF day.

Thanks Karen, we do already have one, but it was already in use in a sheepy situation, just really bad luck/planning!  One in a thousand chance!
