Rash on tummy
« on: April 09, 2010, 07:29:40 pm »
My pigs have a raised itchy rash on their tummies. No where else but they're particularly scratchy. Can't see any critters but do you think it may be lice from straw? If so what can I use on them? Anything easy to apply preferably as they won't lie down fully to let me rub stuff on

Thats exactly what my pigs looked like and on closer inspection I could see tiny brown lice with their heads buried into the skin so I assume they are blood sucking lice.  I have used louse powder and put it on either when they are lying down or when they are eating.  I also put it all over their bedding.

This is when the lice get very active, also find them behind the ears and in the pockets of skin between legs and "arms".  You need to check them almost daily as the little critters breed quicker than rabbits.

I presume that if pigs go to slaughter with lice it doesn't matter does it?

They're out but it's not muddy has been dry all week so ground ok now. I think it's lice as ibitch when I touch them. Can you use spot on or something similar on pigs?

Cooper's Spot On has been de-licensed for pigs and as far as I am aware there is no Spot on that is licensed for pigs.  I think it is possible to buy Cooper's Spot on from a vet, but you have to sign a disclaimer.  Others on here will be able to give you a better answer.

Thanks all I used louse powder they let me cover them in it. Think it was a relief for them. Seems a lot better now.

This last week I have had to "do" at least one pig every day.  Am wondering if they are becoming resistant to my anti flea stuff.
