So I'm in the process of making the new accommodation block for our new house mates - Mr & Mrs Call Duck  (thanks goes to [member=3983]Brucklay[/member] for providing them in a couple of weeks).

Just wondering what products, if any, do people use to protect the wood of their poultry housing (providing its made of wood that is)?
The roof will have shed feelt on it, and I would like to paint/stain/protect the underside of the house block from moisture coming upwards from the ground or indeed rain splash.
Its only the outside facings that will be getting painted/treated and not the inside.

Thoughts, comments, experiences please are all welcome.

We also have felt on the roof CG. Low level woodwork is treated with Cuprinol shed and fence protector- not the water based stuff but the solvent based which soaks in. The remaining exterior is done with several coats of Cuprinol Shades, which is water based. The interior floor is painted white to seal the wood and make cleaning easier. The interior roof is also painted to get more light in and to seal the surfaces as that's where mould spores are likely to form from condensation. The walls and all other timber inside is creosoted to control red mite.


You may be better with a membrane on the floor for the damp, depends on your height. All our coops are well off the floor and the legs are fitted with sacrificial pieces of timber, which are replaced every few years.
