Egg Bound Hen with a happy ending!
« on: April 29, 2015, 07:34:56 pm »
Poppy, one of my Lohmann Browns became egg bound this morning whilst trying to lay a massive egg.   We tried everything to help her to pass it herself as we could see the egg- warm bath, massage with olive oil etc but nothing worked.  Next was a trip to our vet who was brilliant.  She was honest and said that she had never experienced this before but would try and help.   She inserted a needle and syringe into Poppy's vent and into the egg, drew off as much of the contents of the egg that she could then put tons of lubricant inside.  Result - the egg popped out a few minutes later and one very happy hen.  Has anyone else ever seen this done?  I was amazed and so relieved.  Just thought I would share this.

Very good to hear!  I have just had the same thing with my little call duck -- tried warm baths and olive oil massage,  no progress, took her to the vet and he was able to extract the egg with fingers and lots of lubricant.  £20 vet visit for a £10 duck, but still worth it as he thought she'd probably be fine for the future -- just bad luck coming into lay for the first time with the temperature drop, probably.

One of our first hens had a really serious prolapse when she was young. I thought she was a gonner but cleaned her up and popped it all back in. She's still happy and laying 3 years later. So your's should be fine.

I hope that with more experience I'll have the nerve to do things like this too Stereo!
