Red poo. Is this an emergency??
« on: May 09, 2014, 10:03:42 pm »
I just noticed quite a sludgy red poo in the run today, indicating blood in it. Could this be Coccidiosis (spelling??)? Has anyone else experienced this? Does it need Vet attention?
Thanks

Sorry, just read this and don't know the answer to it myself but if you google the backyard chickens website (its an American website) its forum is very helpful for just about everything chickeny.   :fc:

Not necessarily cocci.
It can be normal or sometimes a sign of worms. There is an iPad app called 'ichickens' which has great photos of normal and abnormal poo.
Are the hens well? If so, I'd  worm with flubenvet if not wormed recently and keep a check on them as may be perfectly normal.

sometimes chickens shed intestinal lining which is perfectly normal. If they are adults and due worming then do that, if they are younger keep a close eye for any other signs-depression, hunched appearance, off their food etc.

I agree with above WoodlandsDevon. Are you adding anything to their water like Oregostim?

Thanks for the info. They seem perfectly healthy otherwise, they're about a year old now. I'm not adding anything to the water and I did worm them back in November/December. I may need to do it again because they've been on the same patch since.

Coccidiosis shows with very bright red blood in the poo.  and any bird affectied will looked hunched up with head down and wings drooping.  Sometimes lining are shed in the poo giving a pinky sort of colour
