Pig tick?
« on: April 13, 2014, 07:46:33 pm »
I have 2 saddleback weaners about 10 weeks old.  I noticed that the pink saddle on one of them looked rather red and the skin was a bit flaky and then found a large louse that looked very similar to the head lice my children get at school but much larger.  I have also found one on the other pig and a very small one.  Can anyone tell me the best treatment for this please.

have you just bought them? were they wormed at 8 weeks?
im sure it is noromectin that pigs are wormed with by injection. if done now it should cover internal and external parasites until slaughter.

Check if they have been jabbed with either Noramectin or dectomax prior to you getting them?
If they weren't you can get it done now either by your vet or collecting ready made-up jabs from the vet and doing it yourself.
You can also if you fancy a good bit of fun :roflanim:  bath your pigs in a dog flea shampoo, they love a bath but you will have a distinct whiff of the shampoo around you for a day or so, lol! ;D
Enjoy

They weren't wormed before I got them so it looks as though an injection now is the way to go.  How easy is it to inject a pig?  We have injected sheep and alpacas in the past but never had to do pigs.

Mandy - I might challenge the kids to wash the pigs - that way they would also be nice and clean!   :D

It 1ml per 33kg of pig.
Jabs are sub-cutaneous(ie under the skin) usually between the neck & the shoulder.
As i said i just ring the vet and say i want a syringe making up for me to collect but if you have dectomax for sheep you can use that, at 10wks old 0.75ml should be about right but if you gave them a ml it wouldn't do any harm.

Ps the kids will have great fun, we use tepid water in watering cans to damp them, then shampoo them and make sure rinsed thoroughly, if you use a hosepipe don't have it on jet it frightens them and the cold water is a shock, just think how you like to be showered! ;D
