Power cut during incubation
« on: March 24, 2014, 10:58:49 am »
Argh! Woke up this morning to a power cut. It had been flicking on and off overnight and woke up to nothing. My duck eggs are due to hatch tomorrow/Wednesday so have been in lockdown since weekend.

The humidity had dropped to 85% but the temp had dropped to 27 degrees. Luckily I have a generator so set that up and it's running off that now and back up to temp. What's the chances of the ducklings being harmed? :(

Depends on how long it was off for - I had a bulb go on the incubator & didnt notice for a while ( not sure how long) and didnt seem to affect the hatch - was chickens though.

Good luck  : :fc:: either way - shame to see effort wasted right at the last minute.
If you cant beat 'em then at least bugger 'em about a bit.

4 or 5 hours? OH came in from work at 2.30am and it was on but I remember it flicking on and off at about 3am ish. I'll be gutted if I lose them now! Should I sit tight or candle them?

We had an 18 hour power cut about 10 days in with our last batch of duck eggs. All the eggs in the incy at the time were fertile and developing. Ended up with 15 out of 18 hatching. Don't think the power cut affected things at all. Might be different so close to hatching though.

I would expect things to be OK Twizzel. At this stage they are generating their own heat from movement and I wouldn't be concerned if the air temperature only dropped to 27 degrees. I would sit tight and leave them alone as candling them with cause disorientation with further loss of precious energy.
