We had to cull 5 just before Christmas. I had a hard time with it as I raised them from eggs but OH actually did the deed. I have picked all my babies up and cuddled them all from chicks, so that part was less stressful for the birds(but not for me!). Sounds a bit weird but I held each one for cuddles, stroked them and kissed their little red combs before giving them over to hubby who despatched them quickly. Although out of sight of the other hens, they didn't seem to notice anything unusual (apart from me in tears!). I didn't like the experience one bit, but I have to say it wasn't stressful for the birds and was very quick, which was the main thing. I like to handle all mine a lot from day one-it makes my life so much easier when I do need to catch one for whatever reason!. Our cockerels were marans. (I couldn't bring myself to eat them though-they were given to friends!!)
