Removing a slaughter tag
« on: December 07, 2013, 04:46:51 pm »
Finally getting the herd back together again, thanks to Karen  :-*  transporting the last few down from Scotland to Shropshire last month & Wayne returning from stud duties tomorrow.

Unfortunately, a young gilt of my breeding from a sow I rehomed up there has been sent to me with a metal slaughter tag in her ear  :o   Not only is this a problem, as I will be registering her and intending in showing her next year, but the tag has already started cutting into her ear (she's only 6 months-old at the moment)  :(

Has anyone else had experience of removing these horrible bits of metal and advise how best to go about it
Many thanks  :pig:

I've never tried to remove one from a live pig but if I did I'd get a pair of bolt cutters and snip it. Hardest thing would be getting the pig to keep still.

Remember this is a Kune Hughesy - no problem keeping her still  ;)   - just no way I can get a pair of bolt cutters in between her ear and the tag   ::) - I'm more likely to end up cutting her ear off  :-[

Hi

Sorry didn't make myself very clear there  :-[

We are back in Wales - very close to several other TASers (you all know who you are  ;)  ).  Just that Karen was down to attend a meeting in Shropshire, so it saved me a few hundred miles  :relief:

As sausages are a prime reason to keep pigs, don't blame OH :sausage: :sausage: :sausage:

The problem is that  apart from some newly weaned piglets I only have my breeding and future breeding stock at the moment David - and she's not getting her teeth into them  :huff:

Hi
we removed a mangy metal tag with a standard pair of pliers and OH's brute strength whilst I applied apples and tummy rubs to keep her still. Spray afterwards with copious amounts of purple or blue spray to stop any infection, if it bleeds you may need wound powder to stem the drips.
