Hi all,

My name is Danny and I am 24 from Rochdale in Lancashire.

I have recently purchased as small plot of land that was previously part of a larger small holding. I have always been interested in self sustainability and would like to use the land as a small holding however I am very new to this so joined her for information and advice.

I would appreciate any good starter advice for someone looking to do this, especially with regards to the legalities and getting registered correctly.

To run your smallholding with livestock (sheep cows goats) - if that's your plan -  then you will need a holding number (aka CPH number) and a flock number. Best place to start to check whether your plot has a holding number already and if so whether you will need a new one or can use that, and to get a flock number, is to ring Animal Health at your local council. The holding number is XX/YYY/ZZZZ format and the flock number (which goes on ear tags is UKXXXXXX format.


Hope this helps a bit.  By getting a flock number you normally trigger animal health to send to you a keepers guide to looking after the species and also a book of movement forms if it's for sheep (cattle ones done online )

It is my intention to firstly divide my plot from the rest of the other smallholding by putting up stock fencing. I do then intend to speak to RPA with regards to the CPH number. I believe that because this plot is part of a bigger but now subdivided smallholding it will have one, but I would rather have my CPH number.

I also would like to put some sort of storage on the land for tools/feed etc. Once I have a CPH number would I be able to site a 20ft storage container for this purpose?

Storage container will depend on your local authority. Because they aren't readily moveable with onsite equipment, some LAs don't view them as mobile (which wouldn't require PP) but as structures which do need PP (and holding doesn't sound big enough to do any sort of streamlined agricultural prenotification instead of PP)


So it may be worth checking with them. Some are ok, some aren't.


If they are not then you might need to look at something like a towable trailer or a building on skids which would qualify as mobile. Or apply for pP for a permanent structure.

Thanks for that. Just for my own benefit. If The structure has wheels is that defined as a temporary structure?

Also with regards to the CPH number. If I ring up and find out that the land already has one because it was previously part of a now subdivided smallholding, can I request a new one that is specific to myself?
