Too late for overwintering onions?
« on: September 25, 2013, 11:00:24 pm »
Have I missed the boat on overwintering onions? I could order them this weekend and probably get them in the ground for early October. Is it still worth ordering some sets?

Perfect timing, I think. Mine went in later (end October?) last year and did well. I ordered mine last week, bed is all ready but they've not been delivered yet (nor has the garlic from a different source) so I'm certainly hoping it's not too late. Mind you it's been over 20 degrees here for the last couple of days so it still feels like summer at the moment!

Great news   I will order my sets this week and hopefully have them in the ground by the end of next week. Haven't had much success with my previous attempts with overwintering onions. But this years onions have been great so I am hoping I can keep my run going with a few early varieties for next year.  :fc:

The onions and garlic here will be going in next month. It's still warm and I've just finished digging up the potatoes which is where the onions and garlic go over winter.

I got them in in November one year, and they did well... Coulnd't find any when I wanted them, and then got them by chance when I was on holiday late in the year - so in they went.

I don't overwinter the onions. I plant my onion sets in March BUT the garlic goes in on the 22nd December and is lifted on 22nd june. Hope this helps.
