fertile eggs
« on: August 10, 2013, 09:06:59 pm »
is there someone in the Aberdeenshire area that i can buy some eggs for our incubator please, was successful with our chocolate buffs last time so would like to try something else. Can someone also tell me if you can tell by their (choc buffs) colourings if they are male or female, i have 2 that have various browns through them and 1 that is all one darker colour.  :)

Hi Thestephens. You haven't said what breed they are, but I think it highly unlikely the colours will tell the sex. Unless it is an autosexing breed, in which case you would only have two marking versions as hatched chicks, one being female and one being male.

the are chocolate orpingtons, 2 very much identical and one different which made me think they could be different sexes.

Orpingtons sex at 20 weeks plus Thestephens. They are not autosexing. When they crow they are cockerels.

In a couple of weeks I might have some pekin eggs available but fertility is usually declining at this time of year.
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.
