Good news, bad news.
« on: August 12, 2009, 08:24:23 am »
Hi all

Had a bit of a hectic start to the week so far.  Cinnamon, our matriarch Nanny has been off colour for a week or so and we called the Vet out to her.  He was unsure what the problem was so gave her antibiotic.  She has been eating less than usual and losing weight but stopped eating concentrate altogether.  Monday she was much worse with stiff limbs and arching her head back.  I hate the sound of them grinding their teeth as you know they're in pain. Vet came out again and gave her steroid and pain killer and we syringed some water down her as she was dehydrated. Tuesday morning we knew there was no more we could do for her, she could not stand and the panic in her eyes was pitiful.
I just went to call the vet, when he came round the corner. He suspected that we would need him one way or the other tuesday morning.  He put her to sleep whilst I held her head.......

He took a blood sample and is sending it off for testing for CAE.

In the middle of all the chaos and to-ing and fro-ing on Monday Gust, our other Nanny, quietly gave birth to triplets. All Black & White like their Dad and all healthy.  Two Nannies and a Billy.

Life eh?

Dave

Congratulations - three kids is great, is she feeding ok.

Sorry about the loss, Joe always says "If you have livestock, you'll have deadstock".

Amazing how closely nature replaced your loss - and three kids, usually twins is the norm isn't it?

Good luck to the threee newborns

Hi Dave, congratulations on your new arrivals. I am sure these new additions will help ease the pain of your loss. 2 years ago I had  pygmy goat take unwell and for 4 days the vet was here 2,3,4 times a day. The vet kept saying he would get better but in the end I too had to have him put to sleep. He wasn't even a year old and was one of the most beautiful Pygmy goats I have ever seen. It is a terrible thing to happen but sadly something we all have to face when we keep animals. I hope your kids do well, can we have a pic please?

sorry about your loss.  I have had many goats over the years, and most of them have lived to well in their teens, but some have gone downhill very fast, and we never found out the reason.  I do find goats seem to lose the will to live, and cannot tolerate pain too well.

Good to hear your have some kids - I had a nany who had three kids and they were all billies!!!  Would love to see a pic of your kids.
